American Solar Partners will work with Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of the Electrical Workers to develop a “Solarize” campaign that embraces the traditional Solarize group purchasing model for residential solar AND community solar.
IBEW Local 3 has approximately 30,000 members who live in diverse housing situations and have different income-levels. American Solar Partners, founded in 2010, is a NABCEP approved PV installer and has installed residential and commercial solar power systems in New York City. American Solar Partners has collaborated with IBEW Local 3 successfully in the past on solar projects and solar training.
Community solar power is new to New York State, where the first community system was completed in October, 2016. By including IBEW Local 3, this project will bring community solar to where it can do the most good—urban communities (in this case, New York City).
This will project will demonstrate the effectiveness of affinity group marketing that takes advantage of existing social networks to educate consumers about solar power. Furthermore, it will show the advantage of integrating community solar in a Solarize-style community campaign. By allowing tenants and other electric customers who cannot host solar power systems behind-the-meter solar power system to participate in shared solar, this integrated campaign will be more efficient than traditional Solarize campaigns.
