- Project / Program Description
The City of Miami is creating Brighter Days- Em(POWER)ing Communities (BDEC), an innovative program that will leverage public, private and non-profit partnerships to unlock the solar market for all members of our community, with a focus on low and moderate income (LMI) populations. This pilot project will break down the barriers of high upfront costs for LMI households to access solar benefits, by the City’s lead with a bold investment in the first solar energy road way (or sidewalk) in the State of Florida. This investment will generate low-cost, long-term sustainable solar power for private/public electricity needs in the OMNI Community Redevelopment Area and West Coconut Grove neighborhood in Miami, allowing local residents savings through a utility discount or city resilience rebate program. This innovative investment pilot project will be the initial test of the model to empower the community to expand and scale the use of private solar energy production through financing programs on a long-term basis.
